ZAKA – A double tragedy befell a Zaka family on Sunday morning when an elderly uncle who was being shown a new car by his nephew accidentally accelerated the vehicle thereby crashing six mourners and killing the village head in the process.
The incident happened at Siyawareva Village under Chief Ndanga.
Zaka village head, Patrick Chilo (84) was hit on the head and chest by the Toyota Vitz and he died on the spot while 6 other mourners who were run over are admitted at Musiso Hospital in Jerera and four are said to be in a critical condition.
Masvingo Police Spokesperson Inspector Charity Mazula said she is yet to receive the report. Joseph Chilo who is the deceased`s young brother however, confirmed the incident and said the late village head was buried at Chilo Village on Wednesday after a post-mortem carried out in Masvingo.
Peter Imbayarwo who is Councillor for Ward 19 where the mishap took place confirmed the incident.
He said the matter was reported to the Police and he was not sure if anyone has yet been charged for the accident.
Tragedy struck when the owner of the car whose name The Mirror could not establish at the time of going to Press went about showing his uncle Toperesu Makwara the new vehicle. The Mirror understands that Makwara who was the bereaved at the funeral after losing his wife was asked to get into the car so that the nephew could take pictures of him.
He is said to have accidentally put his foot on the accelerator of the car whose engine was already running and the car reversed thereby crashing into a group of mourners that was sitting at the funeral.
"I can confirm that my brother Chilo died after he was hit by a car at a funeral. We were at the funeral of Makwara's wife when Makwara accidentally got the vehicle into motion thereby hitting several mourners.
"The body was taken by police for a post-mortem in Masvingo and we expect to bury him on Wednesday morning at his homestead in Chilo village" said Chilo.
