ZVISHAVANE - The Zvishavane derby explodes into life on Sunday afternoon as Shabanie Mine tackle their cash-rich neighbours FC Platinum in a Castle Lager Premier Soccer League match at Maglas Stadium.
The two teams face off in their first league encounter since 2014 and there is no doubt that despite the three points at stake, the bragging rights of the small mining town are also on offer.
Platinun is likely to be under the guidance of Patrick Mandizha, a former Shabanie Mine player from 2002 to 2005, as head coach Norman Mapeza is on national duty preparing the Warriors for a match against Liberia.
Matches between the two teams have been characterised by violence but FC Platinum would be professional and winning against the asbestos miners will be a source of pride for them. The Pure Platinum Play is yet to lose a match in the PSL but Chinda Boys are likely to cause an upset to Platinum's unbeaten run.
FC Platinum and Shabanie Mine are perennial rivals, stretching back to their flirtation in the lower division leagues.
"Local derbies are characterised by violence and you know Zvishavane is a small community. Shabanie and FC Platinum have always been enemies and now that atmosphere has been amplified. We as FC Platinum will be professional. We respect Shabanie Mine as they have been no pushovers by beating big clubs like Highlanders and holding giants Dynamos and Caps United to draws. Winning against them will be a source of pride for the club and the supporters," Mandizha said.
Shabani FC Technical Manager Taku Shariwa said the game is one of the sensational encounters and playing against Platinum is like playing a championship match hence the team will give their all to reign supreme in Zvishavane
"Its like a championship match and both teams would want to prove their supremecy. As Shabani we will take the game like any other game. Our opponent has never lost a game so far but that is history Sunday's match is a different game altogether. We are ready to cause an upset," said Shariwa.
Shabani has proved that their type of play and magical combination between inform Collin Duhwa, William Mapfumo, Farai Mupasiri and Nelly Mazivisa can create goals for them. Shabani clobbered Bantu 4-1 in their last home match and would love to continue with that scoring formula.
In other matches on Saturday Yadah faces Hwange at the NSS, Harare City hosts Chicken Inn at NSS, Dynamos travel to Beitbridge to face Tsholotsho, Bulawayo City lock horns with local How Mine at Barboufields, ZPC Kariba hosts Bantu Rovers at Nyamhunga. On Sunday Highlanders hosts the sugar boys Triangle at Barboufields, Ngezi Platinum plays with visitors Chapungu at Baobab while the Caps United and Black Rhinos match has been postponed.
