MASVINGO – Zimbabwe has achieved notable milestones in improving media freedoms, Phillip Shumba the chairman of Masvingo Lawyers' Association has said.
Speaking at the Press Freedom Day commemorations organised by The Mirror in Masvingo on Saturday, Shumba said there were two specific areas where laws have been amended resulting in provisions that allowed for more freedom of expression.
He applauded the bench for abolishing criminal defamation from the statutes as one milestone.
Criminal defamation could see journalists being sent to prison for at least three years if they were found guilty of an offence.
He also cited Constitutional Amendment number 19 and said Press Freedom has been guaranteed in the Supreme Law of the country for the first time. Shumba was accompanied at the commemorations by lawyer Martin Mureri.
