CHIKOMBA – Christopher Chihota, the Provincial Education Officer for Mash East has ordered the closure of a boarding facility at Riversdale Primary School that was neither registered nor met the required standards.
The school is about 40km from Featherstone.
The Mirror established that there were 20 pupils, 10 boys and 10 girls at the boarding facility.
Chikomba District Schools Inspector Emmanuel Kwenda confirmed the matter to The Mirror.
He said that the school did not have proper boarding papers and the standards were poor to the extent that pupils were crowded in their little hostels.
The conditions of the pupils were exposed after a visit by an audit team from the Provincial offices.
Efforts to get a comment from the head Malvern Muzirikizi or the PED were fruitless.
After the audit, Muzirikizi went to see the Education Officer (Infrastructure Development) Joseph Mangwiro who referred him to the Provincial Education Director who then ordered him to close the boarding facility.
Employees who worked at the boarding were not happy at the closure as they are bound to lose jobs. The boarding is understood to have served those children who walked long distances to school.
