ZVISHAVANE – A 34-year-old man from Whande Village under Headman Matenda will soon appear before Chief Masunda after he allegedly bashed his mother-in-law for advising her daughter to cook his relish 'spiced' with a lizard tail.
Dickson Chatsauka left his mother-in-law Sarah Hadebe (71) with a swollen face.
He believed that the tail was a concoction meant for him to be subservient to his wife.
Chief Masunda confirmed the case and said the couple and the mother-in-law were expected to appear before his court at Vaka Village last Friday.
It is alleged that on Independence Day Chatsauka returned from Matenda Growth Point and was offered supper by his wife Kudzai Hadebe (28). While eating he came across a lizard tail and some small sticks in the relish
He questioned his wife over those items and she professed ignorance. Chatsauka who was under the influence of alcohol threatened to kill his wife with an axe and it was then that she allegedly confessed that she had been instructed by her mother Hadebe to add the tail and some herbs in his relish as a love portion.
The fuming Chatsauka headed towards his in-laws home that same night and confronted his mother-in-law over the issue. There was an altercation and Chatsauka slapped his mother-in-law twice before he was restrained by family members.
"I received the report and summoned Chatsauka for hearing as it is taboo in our culture for a son-in-law to assault his mother-in-law. It is the highest level of disrespect. However, when he explained the circumstances behind the assault I summoned the mother-in-law and the wife for we don't tolerate witchcraft," said Chief Masunda.local news
