MASVINGO – The chairman of the Media Department, Fungai Chiyadzwa has died.
Chiyadzwa died on Saturday following a minor operation at a private clinic in Masvingo where he was supposed to have an abscess (mota) cleaned by a doctor. He was buried at Glen Forest Cemetery in Harare on Tuesday.
Masvingo Provincial Information Officer Rodgers Irimayi who accompanied the deceased to see the doctor confirmed the death and expressed shock on the suddenness of it.
Lydia Chiyadzwa, the widow of the deceased said the minor operation was supposed to take about 40 minutes but Chiyadzwa never woke up after being put to sleep.
The Doctor who performed the operation could not comment for professional reasons. He said the matter involved personal information and he also needed to be sensitive to the situation of the bereaved relatives.
He said such sudden death cases are handled by the Medical and Dental Practitioners' Council of Zimbabwe.
"Chiyadzwa had an abscess on one of his buttocks and his wife and I accompanied him to a local doctor in town who said it needed to be cleaned and this was around 1pm. We were asked to buy various drugs including a drip and we did and I left him at the private clinic at 2pm, hoping to collect him at 3pm.
"I came back to the disaster, he could not talk, he could not open his eyes and urgent arrangements were being made to ferry him to Harare. He eventually went to the West End Clinic where he died last Saturday after spending two weeks in hospital. He never regained consciousness until he died," said Irimayi.
Chiyadzwa worked as a Police Officer before he joined the Ministry of Information as district information officer in Chegutu. He left to join the media department at GZU. He had a Masters Degree in Media and Society Studies from the Midlands State University and had just embarked on his PHD.
A Mirror senior staff said Chiyadzwa was supposed to be the guest speaker at the newspaper's Press Freedom Day Commemorations on May 6, but phoned to cancel the engagement when he was admitted for the operation.
Chiyadzwa is survived by his wife Lydia and three kids, Tawonga, Tinodaishe and Takunda.
