MASVINGO – Gokomere Mission saw its biggest mass wedding on Sunday last week when 26 couples from the mission community made vows and wedded partners some of whom they have stayed with for 30 years without the holy sacrament of marriage.
The couples were convinced by Father Vincent Muzenda, the Priest-in-charge at Gokomere to wed.
The couples who ranged in age from the late 20s' to the 60s' are all part of the Mission community and although they attended church, they never wedded. Some of them wedded in the presence of their grandchildren.
Father Maxwell Mabvuure of St Bhakita in Soti Source in Gutu officiated at the wedding while Father Richard Pundo who is the Dean of Masvingo Deanary was also present.
"It is the biggest mass wedding here at Gokomere. It troubled my conscience that I could as a priest stay with so many unwedded couples in my community. It surely would be a disservice to God to stay here this long with people who did not wed.
"I called them and discussed it with them. Excuses for not wedding varied and the most common one was that they did not have money for the wedding and wedding parties. They gladly came forward to wed when they realised that it was not expensive," said Father Muzenda.
Father Mabvuure urged the husbands to be good shepherds of their wives and children.
The mass wedding was held last Sunday and the most exciting time for the more than 2 000 congregants at the wedding was when the couples kissed each other one couple after another.
