CHIREDZI – The 2017 sugarcane cutting season will open on Monday with out-grower farmers expecting to harvest more than 1 138 000 tonnes of sugarcane.
Tongaat Hulett Corporate Affairs and Communications Manager Adelaide Chikunguru confirmed to The Mirror that the 2017 sugarcane cutting season will begin on Monday May 15, 2016. She said her company has already employed hundreds of casual workers who will undertake various duties during the period.
"I can confirm that the 2017 cutting season is beginning next week. We will start cutting in Triangle on May 15, 2017 and Hippo Valley will start on May 26, 2017. We are fully prepared for the cutting season and we have employed hundreds of casual workers who will do various jobs during this period," said Chikunguru.
Mkwasine Sugarcane Farmers Association secretary for publicity Wellington Mudzimiri said in Mkwasine cutting will begin on Tuesday May 16 and farmers have high hopes that they will surpass last year`s harvest since this year a lot of rains were received. He however, said wet surfaces may affect transportation of the sugarcane from the fields.
