GWERU – Smelly Dube, one of the biggest land developers in the Midlands Province who recently built and donated a house to President Mugabe is in the eye of the storm after angry Zanu PF youth and women demonstrated against her this week, making a litany of accusations against her.
Ironically Dube has won many national awards including the Businesswoman of The Year at such esteemed platforms as the Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce.
One of her housing schemes in Woodlands, Gweru was condemned by the City Council and the Environmental Management Agency for having been carried out without approval and violating environmental requirements. Gweru City Engineer Robson Manatsa said ratepayers are going to cough out $5 million to have a dumpsite which is near her Woodlands Housing Project removed.
Efforts to get a comment from Dube on the demonstrations were fruitless.
The demonstrators accused Dube of using her money to destabilize Zanu PF.
They also accused her of getting large tracts of land in Gweru, Shurugwi, Gokwe, Zvishavane and other places and they said she did this in the name of helping Zanu PF women and youth but was allegedly now selling the stands for commercial gain.
The demonstrations were also against Minister of Local Government Saviour Kasukuwere who they accused of causing instability in the party.
Zanu PF Women's league secretary for administration Perseverance Zhou accused Dube of destroying Zanu PF in the Midlands.
"Dube is using the party name to gain a lot of land in the Midlands. She gets this in the name of party women and youth," said Zhou.
