MASVINGO – Salomme Vimbainashe Silindo (21) from Bikita has been crowned Miss Independence Masvingo Province at a colourful ceremony held at Charles Austin Theatre.
The event took place on Thursday last and was organised by the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe Masvingo Province with assistance from former Miss Tourism Gayly Mhonderwa of MGM Modelling Agency and provincial information officer Rodgers Irimayi.
To land the crown Silindo had to fend off stiff competition from five other participants from other districts. Trish Sibanda from Chivi was crowned First Princess, Tamara Tembo from Mwenezi was the Second Princess.
Ruvarashe Mukuyu was Miss Independence 2016.
The Provincial Administrator Fungai Samuel Mbetsa who was the guest of honour praised the organising committee for doing a great job in trying to identify modelling talent and enabling rural youth to participate in such events.
Silindo excelled in the category of military wear contest and that tilted the contest in her favour.
According to Moreblessing Mugutso one of the event organisers, the main category that influenced evaluation of winners was the military wear considering the fact that the country's independence came through the barrel of the gun hence the event was part of the 37th Independence Anniversary.
"Miss Independence 2017 has set a challenge to other young people from the rural areas. Young people especially those from the rural areas should participate in State occasions to orient themselves to real patriotic issues that shape our country," said Warara," said Mugutso.
