BUHERA – A councillor from Ward 11, Gurupa area in Buhera North has embarked on water harvesting projects and one of them is the construction of Gurupa Weir along Gumunyu River which is going to benefit 400 people with irrigation and water for their animals.
The project which started in October 2015 was sponsored by World Vision and Councillor Ngonidzashe Chinaka who mobilised 230 people from the community to provide labour.
The weir is 7m deep and it will supply Gurupa Irrigation Scheme that was constructed by Agritex.
There are also plans to start fishing projects for the community.
"Gurupa Weir is going to benefit over 400 people and their livestock. It is also going to help alleviate poverty and hunger in the local community," said Chinaka.
Chinaka has also rehabilitated Jekecha Weir.
The councilor has also started Farmer Management Natural Regeneration project in the community to ensure regreening of forests and grazing land for cattle.
