ZVISHAVANE – Unlike in the past when Tsvangirai depended a lot on rallies for mobilisation, there is a shift in strategy as he is now meeting traditional leaders at the most local level as evidenced by his visits to Mberengwa and Zvishavane on Tuesday.
Tsvangirai met village heads, chiefs, pastors, civic leaders and other opinion leaders in closed door meetings.
The media was barred from his meetings as he held his meetings at Senator Lillian Timvious' residence in Langeni Village, Mberengwa North.
Tsvangirai's spokesperson Luke Tamborinyoka told The Mirror after the meetings that the meeting was to consult leaders on the proposed coalition and the forthcoming elections.
"The president (MDC) is moving around the country meeting various opinion leaders and elections are key to the discussions. He is using people's views in understanding what people expect in the future Zimbabwe.
"The president wants to start from the grassroots and create a bond with opinion leaders who are always manipulated for the wrong cause by Zanu PF during elections," he said.
Tamborinyoka said although the party shall conduct rallies in future the current program has yielded positive results and gave leaders such as chiefs the opportunity to meet Tsvangirai without interference from the securocrats.
"For years Chiefs have failed to attend our rallies yet these are key figures that can influence the electorate but this strategy has given us the opportunity to mingle and share ideas for a better Zimbabwe," said Tamborinyoka.
The MDC leader was accompanied by National Youth Chairman Happymore Chidziva, national executive members, Senator Timvious, and the provincial executive.
Tsvangirai will complete his Midlands tour after visiting Shurugwi, Chiundura, Vungwi before concluding with a Midlands provincial council in Gweru at the end of the week.
