CHIREDZI – Zaka Rural District Council which is operating on a shoe-string budget has leased out its community hall to Gain Cash 'n' Carry Wholesalers and will receive $500 a month in rentals.
However, residents are fuming at the move as there no places anymore for meetings, social interactions and other community programmes.
Council Chairman Sebastian Musundire said that there was a wholesaler who applied for permission to use the community hall but that is as far as he knows because he was away.
Educationist and resident of Jerera Peter Munjenge said the resolution by council to lease out the hall is a sick joke. He said it showed that council is clueless and selfish. He said the motive of service must be bigger than that of profit for any local authority.
Masundire promised to furnish The Mirror with details later.
The Mirror is informed that a special meeting convened in January 2017 approved the leasing out of the community hall to Gain Cash 'n' Carry Wholesalers.
"The resolution is shocking. The mandate of a council is social service delivery and profit motive should be the least of all. Our council is selfish and clueless and they are doing this without consulting stakeholders of the district. Leasing out a social facility to a private business shows that the social service concept is lacking in them since the community will no longer have a venue to have social gatherings," said Munjenge.
