Mwenezi man assaults father over lost cattle

MWENEZI – A man from Mwenezi was last week jailed for eight months after he severely assaulted and injured his elderly father who wanted to restrain the accused from beating his son, Listen Chengeta (12) who had lost his cattle.
Tinei Chengeta of Mangondi Village under chief Chitanga is however going to serve an effective five months after Mwenezi resident magistrate, Honest Musiiwa suspended three months for good behaviour.
Chengeta pleaded guilty to domestic violence charges but dismissed allegations that he used a spear to hit his father Revai Chengeta (61) on the head and said he used a cooking stand (pfihwa) instead.
When asked by the magistrate as to why he acted in that manner, Chengeta could only say he wished the incident had not happened.
"I give myself to God who knows everything. I wish such an incident had not happened in my life time", said Chengeta.
The dispute occurred last year on December 31, 2016.
Revai could not stand seeing his grandson being beaten hence he rushed to rescue him.
Revai was rushed to Neshuro District Hospital where he received treatment. A Police report was made leading to Chengeta's arrest.
    Willard Chasi prosecuted.
