MASVINGO-Construction mogul Stanley Kondongwe has been elected captain of the 18 hole Masvingo Golf Club for 2017 in a landslide victory at the refurbished clubhouse last week on Wednesday.
Kondongwe trounced the 2016 vice-captain Nick Manjoro by 12 votes to 4 to land the influential post.
Kizito Mukosera was also elected vice-captain on the same day, Thomas Mbetu becomes the new green keeper, Happy Tazviinga was elected treasurer while Judah Gwatiringa was elected committee member.
During the course of the year I want to ensure that the course is upgraded to world standards through mobilisation of funds from the corporate community as a way of giving back to the community," said Kondongwe soon after landing the post.
His committee replaces the one which was led by renowned architect Cassian Mutsambiwa which was in office for two years and oversaw the refurbishment of the clubhouse which was officially opened on Saturday last week.
The enovations were funded spearheaded by Nyaradzo Group who paid for the bar, the roof, the ceiling and tiles while Ok Zimbabwe paid for the ladies toilet and a group led by Parirenyatwa medical lecturer Professor Jonathan Matenga paid for the men's toilet.
A golf captain is elected for one year term and acts as the Club's figurehead for all matters relating to both golf and social events. He chairs meetings including the AGM, arranges matches and is responsible for the external selection of teams to play against other teams.
He is also responsible for selecting playing partnerships, arranges order of play, makes speeches at post match prize giving ceremonies and announces results although this may be delegated to other members in the committee.
