MBERENGWA – Some members of a notorious gang that has allegedly been attacking Mberengwa residents, robbing them of cash, gold, cows and other valuables has been arrested and they appeared in court.
Samuel Moyo (26), Goodwill Zhou(19), Neverest Chirungu (17), Micheal Mumbegegwi (24) and Bhekani Bhebhe (23) appeared before Mberengwa Magistrate Tavengwa Sengster when they faced charges of robbing prominent businessman, Taurai Zimwara of $7000.
It is alleged that sometime last year Zimwara was drinking beer at a local night club at Mberengwa business centre when the accused approached him and commanded him to buy beer for them.
Zimwara refused to oblige and the gang dragged him outside the bar. It is alleged that the gang assaulted Zimwara using machetes and clenched fists resulting in severe injuries on the back, mouth and head.
The gang took away Zimwara's car keys, searched the vehicle and fled away with $7000.
In December and January this year the gang is alleged to have been causing havoc at Van Guard Mine where they were robbing gold panners in Mberengwa.
Police acting on a tip off raided the gang at one of their hideouts and arrested five members. The hunt for the members who escaped is on.
The arrested members are remanded in prison until February 9, 2017. Wadzanai Shayanewako prosecuted.
