CHIREDZI – Two bodies are still missing, four weeks after a lorry carrying 20 people was swept away by floods at Chongwe River Bridge in Maware killing six people.
There are now fears that the bodies could have been deposited into the crocodile infested Chiredzi River.
Acting Chiredzi District Administrator who is also the Civil Protection Unit District Chairperson, Ndeya Nyede said two bodies from the six people who died were still missing and the community is continuing with searches. He added that current rains were disturbing the searches.
"I can confirm that the bodies of Susan Manyora of Ruware Ranch and Evelyn Siyanda (58) who were visiting from Bindura are not yet recovered.
"They went missing after the lorry in which they were travelling was swept away by the flooded river at Chongwe Bridge on December 14, 2016. Searches by the community are still continuing but effective searches are hampered by the rains. We suspect that the bodies may have been deposited into the crocodile infested Chiredzi River" said Nyede.
During the fateful day Marshwell Rugadza who was driving the pirating lorry attempted to cross the flooded river against the advice of passengers. Halfway through the river the engine stalled and he ordered all passengers to disembark and they complied despite some of them protesting. While they were pushing the lorry flash floods came and swept everyone away.
