ZVISHAVANE - A Zvishavane National Traffic Police officer Onwell Mafuta (25) was on Saturday nabbed in a sting operation when he allegedly went to an accused person's workplace to collect money for bribe.
Mafuta allegedly demanded a bribe of $120 from Dr Moses Nyamapanzi, a dentist in Zvishavane after he had investigated a traffic offence.
Mafuta represented by his lawyer Leopold Mudisi appeared before Zvishavane Magistrate Achy Wochiung facing charges of Criminal Abuse of Duty as Public Officer as defined in Section 174(1)(a) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform Act).
He is alleged to have demanded $120 from Nyamapanzi (32) as an incentive for him to reduce the gravity of a traffic offense after the former was involved in a road accident.
State prosecutor Stanly Ncube said on December 2, 2016 Nyamapanzi was involved in an accident at the 121,5km peg along the Masvingo-Mbalabala road.
Mafuta was tasked to investigate the matter and charged Nyamapanzi for contravening Section 52 (2) of the Road Traffic act 13:11 – "negligent driving".
On January 7, 2017 Mafuta phoned the complainant and invited him to meet at Edgars, Zvishavane. He demanded a bribe of $120 from Nyamapanga so that he could reduce the charge to 'Driving without due care and Attention' as defined in Section 51(1) of the said Act so that the matter would be finalized at station instead of going to court.
On January 10, 2017, Nyamapanga lodged a complaint at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), Zvishavane and a trap was set to that effect.
On January 14, 2017, Mafuta went to Nyamapanga's workplace and unlawfully received $120 from him which is contrary with his duties.
Mafuta was instantly arrested by detectives who were assigned to carry out the trap. The accused was searched and found in possession of the $120 trap money consisting of 4 X USD$20 serial numbers NC91905516C, MC 00557358C, ME10855070D, ML78461085F and 4 X USD$10 serial numbers MB36612296C, MG57472115A, MB80472081C and MC45736148A in his left riot trousers pocket which is the same money that was photocopied and certified for the trap.
The trap authority and the trap money is being used as exhibit.
Mafuta was remanded out of custody to January 30, 2017 for set-down.
