CHIREDZI – The era of beer gardens in Zimbabwe seems to be over for good now.
Chigarapasi, the country's biggest beer hall is closing down on December 31, 2016, a senior Chiredzi Town Council official has confirmed.
The council says it's closing down the country's most famed beer hall to comply with a Government directive to close all non-profit making entities.
Town Council Secretary Charles Muchatukwa confirmed the development and said the popular bar will close doors for some days before it is leased to a private operator. He said the process to look for a new operator will begin while the bar is closed and council has no option but to close the beerhall following a directive from the Ministry of Local Government to close all loss making operations.
"We will close Chigarapasi Bar on December 31, 2016 in compliance to a communication received from our parent ministry. We will start the process of leasing it to private players while the doors are closed. Our first priority was to give the workers who are working in there the opportunity to run it but they turned down the offer so we will look for someone to run it," said Muchatukwa.
The impending temporary closure of the biggest beerhall in the country is being received with mixed feelings as married women in the town received it with happiness praying that the move should be permanent while hundreds of sex workers who ply their trade in and around it feel affected.
