CHIKOMBA – In a case of extreme desperation, the hubby of a Police officer based at Sadza Growth Point in Mashonaland East hid a laptop that he had stolen in a refrigerator when cops at the camp started door to door searches for the item.
A woman in the camp, Revai Gumbo her left her house for a few minutes to collect her child from the neighbourhood only to return and find her room opened and a laptop HP255 stolen. She immediately made a report at the Police office and a search part was put together and in no time swooped on the neighbouring houses.
The party went for the first two rooms and found nothing and then converged at Sindiso Ncube's (38) room where they found the door locked. There was no response when the officers knocked but they were suspicious because there was someone at the house earlier.
Another officer, Constable Muchato went up to an opening in the ceiling and peeped through a hole and saw Ncube hiding behind a bed. The officers removed some material in the roof and Sergeant Chiukwema and Muchato entered the room.
They advised Ncube that they were searching for a stolen laptop and Sergeant Chikwema found it hidden in the accused person's refrigerator and Gumbo positively identified the laptop as hers. Chivhu Resident Magistrate Story Rushambwa said Ncube had embarrassed his wife who is a Police officer by stealing a laptop from the neighbourhood.
He sentenced him to 18 months in prison with 12 months suspended for five years.
The stolen laptop which is valued at $300 was recovered.
