MBERENGWA - Mberengwa Rural District Council has lost US$33 000 after a dealer it contracted to supply it with 26 000 litres of fuel allegedly disappeared without delivering the liquid.
The fuel stolen was 15 000 litres of petrol and 11 000 diesel.
It later emerged that the same dealer, Petros Simango had earlier on failed to deliver another consignment after receiving US$10 000, bringing the total amount lost in the contract to US$43 000, according to State papers issued last week on Wednesday.
The matter is now before Mberengwa Magistrates Court.
The State alleges that sometime in September 2015, Mberengwa RDC advertised a tender for fuel supply in a local daily paper and there were no takers for the bid resulting in the local authority engaging Petros Simango who is the director of Tamco investments in Gweru.
Simango supplied council with fuel at different intervals but sometimes there were shortfalls in supplies resulting in him owing a cumulative $10 091,71 to council.
On December 4, 2015, a purchase order with $32 995 was rendered to Simango by Council to supply 15 000 litres of petrol and 11 000 diesel. Council did a wire transfer to Simango's bank account (Agribank 120000041802) at Mataga branch.
Simango is alleged to have promised to deliver the fuel inside three days but failed to do so.
Council Chief Executive Officer, Julius Mashavakure contacted Simango in connection with the fuel but he allegedly said he had been duped with cheap fuel by his supplier and was therefore making an effort to recover the money.
Simango is alleged to have referred the council to one Muza for the recovery of the money but that did not yield anything.
After several months, council then suspected that it had been duped and made a report at Mataga Police Station.
This is when it was allegedly discovered that Simango was owing council another $10 091,71 in supply shortfalls on previous fuel orders.
All the transfer documents and fuel supply orders have been gathered and are to be presented in court as exhibit.
