GOKWE – The Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) Church has adopted a female ward at Gokwe South District Hospital where the church will take complete charge of the running costs incurred there.
The hospital is one of the biggest district referral centres in the country and notably Gokwe South District registers about 700 births every month.
The Church is going to paint the ward, clean it every Sunday, look after all those admitted in the ward including paying bills and providing food for the patients.
So far the Adventist Church has used $2 500 on the ward after buying new plates, spoons and bed covers.
The adoption of the ward which was officiated by the Minister of State for Midlands Province, Jason Machaya who however sent his Director Cliton Diwa was formalised at a function two weeks ago.
The aim of the project is to improve hospital standards and make sure that less privileged people in the communities receive good health care.
SDA Healthy Director Simbarashe Mhako said that the church is taking over all logistical needs of the wards from cleaning to refurbishment.
"By adopting the ward we simply mean that we are going to look after all the patients who will be admitted in the ward. We are going to clean the ward every Sunday, we are going to paint it, provide food to patients and pay medical bills for some patients who do not afford," said Mhako.
Gokwe South District Medical Officer Takunda Sola said the move will go a long way in reducing Government burden in such tough economic times.
"This will go a long way in assisting Government during such hard economic times. Gokwe South Hospital is one of the busiest hospitals in the country considering it is the biggest district. Around 700 children are born in this district per month and to have such well-wishers who come in to assist is very important," said Sola.
