GWANDA – A bizarre habit is said to have developed at St Christopher's Primary school in Gwanda where children are hunting down lizards and eating them alive.
The Mirror is reliably told that the School Development Committee is meeting today (Thursday 24 November 2016) to discuss the issue.
A concerned parent told The Mirror that two minors at the school were spotted trapping lizards and then went on to eat the live reptiles. He said this was not the first time that this has happened in the school and the fear is that the habit can catch up with many other pupils.
Micah Manda, the school head said the matter was internal and there was no need to involve the internal thing. In as much as you are allowed to make your inquiries, the school is not allowed to talk to the Press," said Manda.
Efforts to get a comment from the Provincial Education Director Tumelang Thabisang were fruitless as her phone was unreachable.
The parent who talked to The Mirror said there was great concern that the practice could be Satanist. He said that his son at the school had told him that the habit started with a boy who transferred from South Africa to the school.
A School Development Committee member who requested anonymity confirmed the incident to The Mirror.
"I can confirm that the bizarre incident happened at the school. We are meeting tomorrow (Thursday 24Nov) to discuss the matter," said the SDC member.
"My son told me that there is a group of senior students who go around the school block trapping lizards and eating them alive. The group is being led by one boy who recently transferred from South Africa. This boy is saying he read it in his father's book that very soon the world will run out of food and human beings will feed on lizards," said the parent who leaked the information to The Mirror.
Some parents said what worried them more is that school authorities have not done anything about the issue. They complained that the school had not even told parents about this.
"We are talking about the lives of our children here. I wonder if the school authority is waiting for all kids to eat lizards before he acts," said one
