MASVINGO - Eight parastals operating under the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure Development are attending a strategic planning workshop at the Great Zimbabwe Hotel in Masvingo.
The workshop is also being attended by senior officials from the Ministry including the Permanent Secretary, Muneushe Munodawafa and the Deputy Minister, Engineer Michael Madanha.
Air Zimbabwe Chief Operations Officer and President Mugabe's son-in-law, Simba Chikore briefly attended the workshop before he left back for Harare. The four day-workshop which started on Monday was officially opened by Minister Joram Gumbo and will be closed by the Deputy Minister today (Thursday).
Gumbo indicated during the official opening that the workshop was a continuation of a strategic planning workshop that the Ministry held in Victoria Falls last year.
Some of the key issues which the Minister emphasised on included the separation of roles in which he urged senior Ministry officials and boards of directors to refrain from interfering with the day-to-day running of parastatals.
He also said that the Ministry was decentralising its services so that it will have offices at districts level where the same services that are obtained at headoffice in Harare are also available at district and these include the issuance of road permits.
"At the strategic planning workshop that we held in Victoria Falls last year, I insisted then as I do now, that there is need for a clear separation of roles and functions between the boards and management of our State enterprises.
"Specifically, boards should not involve themselves in operational matters, but should focus on giving policy and strategic direction," said Gumbo.
He also said that the dualisation of Harare-Beitbridge Highway will get underway next year after the signing of the necessary agreements.
The parastatals that attended the workshop include; NRZ, National Handling Services, Road Motor Services, Air Zimbabwe, Civil Aviation Authority, CMED, Traffic Safety Council, and Zinara among others.business news
