CHIREDZI – Chiredzi district is one of the areas with high cases of child abuse in the country with 210 recorded cases of abuse from January to August this year.
Speaking to The Mirror, Childline Project Officer for Chiredzi Givemore Magumuye said the statistics of child abuse cases which were recorded by their organisation shows that 210 cases of abuse were recorded from January up to date.
Fifty-five percent of the cases were abuses by parents who neglect the general welfare of their children, 16 percent sexual abuse, 12% physical abuse and 17%. Childline held 27 awareness campaigns to reach out to both parents and children as a way of reducing the abuse of children in the district.
"From January to June 127 cases of child abuse were recorded and of that number 55 percent were neglect that is failure to pay schools fees and general welfare of children that includes access to medication; 16% were sexual abuse cases, 12% physical abuse and 17% is emotional abuse. These figures shows that abuse of children is common in this district because there are many cases that go unreported. As Childline we are holding awareness campaigns and so far we held 27 campaigns which catered for 11763 children as well as 355 adults" said Magumuye.
