MWENEZI – The Zimbabwe Red Cross Society (ZRCS) is establishing centres of excellence in Mwenezi that will equip people in the district with skills to fight perennial droughts.
This was said by ZRCS secretary general Maxwell Phiri at Maranda Business Centre.
He said his organisation will be setting up centres of skills in the district to train people and equip them with the necessary skills and this is under a five-year programme that is sponsored by the British Red Cross.
"ZRCS is setting up centres of excellence in the district to help educate farmers on issues like water harvesting technologies, improved and climate smart agriculture which also focus on better animal management", Phiri said.
The program also includes the rehabilitation of water projects and construction of water troughs for the purpose of sustainability. Communities are also to be trained to help with hygiene promotion in schools and homes.
He added that, care givers would be trained to provide nutrition education to pregnant and breast feeding mothers. The trained mothers will be provided with support to set up nutrition gardens.
" Volunteers would receive training  in first aid as well as support in food aid and first aid kits so that they stand fit all the time and work on risk management without external assistance", he added.
Phiri said the resilience project initiative was meant to give communities ammunition to stand on their own without external support when disasters struck.
"Red Cross has shifted its focus from the remedial kind of assistance to building community resilience with the aim of empowering communities so that they are able to withstand future shocks caused by disasters", he said.
ZRCS is working with beneficiaries from three wards in the district that is Ward 5,8 and 14. The beneficiaries are expected to increase in number as time goes.
Phiri also said that, the ZRCS is working with local government ministry and other stakeholders.health and safety
