MBERENGWA  - The legislator for Mberengwa South constituency Chiratidzo  Iris Mabuwa has lamented the failure by people from his area to make optimum use of water from Manyuchi and  Mundi-Mataga dams which are nearly always full.
He said people in the constituency were starring and faced serious shortages of water despite the existence of the mega-dams which the constituency shares together with Mwenezi District.
He said the two dams have the capacity to irrigate 1 000 hectares of land.
Speaking at a meeting in Mberengwa South constituency he called for a financial plan that would ensure that people in the area access the water in order to avert hunger and starvation.
He said optimum utilization of the water in the dams can be unlocked if $7 million is found to embark on irrigation schemes at the two dams.
"It is a tragedy that with several water bodies that can irrigate more than 1 000 hectares and feed the entire Mberengwa District, people are going hungry.
"Some children have stopped going to school , livestock succumbing to effects of drought and the entire society is now looking up to the Government for food aid", added  Mabuwa
