    - Mashonaland East Province has so far this year lost 45 000 hectares of grazing land to veld fires.
The Provincial Environment Manager, Juliet Mavu said this at a certificate handover ceremony for the Integrated Community Environmental Training Participants held at Chikomba Rural District Council Hall.
She said a total of 88 lives have been lost to veld fires since 2007.
The event which was held on Friday saw EMA donating 10 beehives, 100 quail birds (zvihuta) and five bags poultry feed.
"We held several training pragrammes in a bid to assist the community in managing, preserving and protecting our environment after we noticed that a large area is being destroyed through veld fires.
"Mashonaland East has lost 45 000h of grazing so far this year. Chikomba District is one of the most affected districts in terms of uncontrolled veld fires followed by Seke District. One child in Seke died because of veld fires. We are looking forward to a change in the way we approach the preservation of our environment through the knowledge we get during the trainings," said Mavu.
The graduation ceremony saw 246 participants receiving certificates and these were drawn from 19 wards.
The guest of honour was Minister of State for Chikomba Rtd Brigadier General Ambros Mutinhiri.
