    – Vungu Rural District Council has engaged debt collectors to recover $1,2 million the local authority is owed by rate payers.
Vungu RDC Chief Executive officer Alex Magura confirmed the developments to The Mirror and said that they engaged debt collectors in June and individuals have since started settling their debts with others making payment plans.
"The local authority decided to take bad debtors for debt collection because the council is owed about US$1,2 million. The debt collectors started working on the issue three weeks ago and l can say that there has been a slight improvement as individuals and companies are coming forward to make payments with others making payment plans.
"The figure has since reduced slightly from the $1,2 million and l am positive that by the end of the year the debt will decrease," said Magura
He also said that Council came to the conclusion that debt collectors were necessary after realising that rate payers were now developing a culture of none payment of rates.
"This is a decision we reached after all other efforts to recover debts failed.
There is a change of attitude as there seem to be more co-operation from rate payers now than before," said Magura
He said that Vungu RDC's ratepayers are mainly famers, small rural businesses and a few notable companies like Sino Zimbabwe and Antelope Park.local news
