MASVINGO - If there was a provincial hall of fame for sports the provincial youth team that participated at the just ended 2016 National Youth Games in Chinhoyi, Mashonalnd West Province deserves to be there.
This is actually a challenge to the powers that be to create such a hall for future reference as the team scooped gold for the first time since the games started in 2002.
The team romped home with12 gold, 6 silver and bronze medals against perennial winners Harare who had to settle for the second position this time around.
Boxing team under the guidance of Felistus Chinezhira Dumbu was the toast of the tournament as it scooped 5 gold and 1 silver medals.
The 5 boxers Adelight Makaure, Tinashe Majoni, Stephen Chadapwisa, Freeman Mabvongodze and Tsitsi Ndlovu with their performance earned themselves a trip to Angola for African Union Sports Council (AUSC) tournament slated for December this year.
Athletes Vimbiso Majoni, Kundai Maguranyanga, Tapiwa Chimeka and Hardlife Machira also contributed immensely to the medal haul by Team Masvingo as they racked in 6 gold, 3 silver and 6 bronze medals.
The outcome of this year`s results marked a twist of improvement from athletics from 2015 where they pocketed 3 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze medals.
The most improved team was the handball squad which was on number 8 last year in Mutare but scooped gold this year.
Team Masvingo edged Harare Metropolitan Province19-18  after Kelvin Munemo`s last gasp score separated the two in a tightly contested final.
Provincial Education Officer (PED) Zedius Chitiga applauded the team for such an exceptional performance which raised the province's bar very high.
Soccer and netball teams` efforts saw them walking home with silver medals.
"We are greatly humbled and honoured by the performance and skill that our team showed, it's a great victory for Masvingo province," said Chitiga.
The delegation had 144 athletes and 30 officials selected from different schools who were outstanding during various competitions throughout the year within Masvingo province.
Twenty athletes which will be under the supervision of Titus Madzingo have been selected from the province into Team Zimbabwe to take party at the forthcoming AUSC tournament in Angola on a date yet to be advised.
Tafadzwa Mashiri who coaches Gutu FC, Gutu High School and Under 17 Zimbabwe soccer team will be guiding the soccer team.
In the year 2014, the team comprised of 4 athletes, 1 boxer, 2 netballers and 11athletes who are visually impaired.
    In 2015 there were 5-athletes, 5-boxers, 2-soccer players, and 5-netballers.sport news
