One sure way of ensuring that Zanu PF loses the 2018 National Elections is to retrench civil servants and evict illegal settlers 18 months before the plebiscite, the Minister of State for Midlands Provincial Affairs Jason Machaya has said.
Machaya said this to Patrick Zhuwawo when they conversed on the sidelines of a youth value addition training programme where the later was the guest of honour.
Zhuwawo is the Minister of Youth, Indeginisation and Economic Empowerment and a member of the Zanu PF Politburo.
Machaya told Zhuwawo to advise Government against the move, adding that Government should wait and effect the retrenchments soon after the 2018 elections.
"We will pack our bags and leave these offices if you make these retrenchments and evictions of illegal settlers now. Let's retrench the civil servants soon after the elections and not now.
"I actually admire the noise you made against job cuts that were planned for your own Ministry some time back. You should make the same noise against this latest move because we will soon be out of jobs as we will lose elections," said Machaya.
When asked for a comment by The Mirror, Machaya first denied ensinuating that civil servants should be retrenched but later admitted that he said it as a personal view.
" I never said anything like that," Machaya said before The Mirror led him through what he  said.
"If you were there, what more then do you want me   to say. It was my personal opinion that Government should find other means of cutting down the huge salary bill and it is in the interest of us as Zanu PF not to end our term of office as the retrenched people and their dependents will definitely shun the party for the opposition, come 2018," said Machaya.
Government has already put in abeyance the planned retrenchment of 25 000 civil servants together with salary and allowances cuts. The eviction of illegal settlers that was supposed to take place beginning September 6 has also not taken place after the Politburo is said to have grown cold feet over them.
