    Agritex in maize production in Mat South

    GWANDA
    - Agritex in conjunction with World Vision has embarked on drought mitigation in Matebeleland South Province through the specialised maize production programme.
    Specialised maize production programme comes in as a national strategy to ensure food security as far as the staple grain is concerned.
    The programme is targeting irrigation farmers and farmers with irrigable land. Matebeleland South Agritex Provincial training specialist, Mkhunjulelwa Ndlovu has confirmed the development.
    The programme which is yearly is expected that farmers participate in the programme with an estimated 2 500 hectares per season under commercial maize production.
    "The Government is helping out farmers in terms of inputs at a cost recovery basis.
    "Farmers state what they need and we recommend the inputs then one has to take all his produce to the Grain Marketing Board where the Government will deduct what is due to it in terms of inputs costs," he said.
