    MHLANGULENI –
The Minister of State for Masvingo Shuvai Mahofa has hailed the Shangaan people found in the southern part of the country for the way they have steadfastly held on to their culture and particularly the circumcision rituals.
Mahofa made the remarks when she was guest of honour at the Great Limpopo Cultural Fair held at Mhlanguleni Grounds two weeks ago.
The Great Limpopo Cultural Fair is organized by Gaza Trust and its objective is to promote, develop and conserve the cultural heritage of the marginalised communities.
She said that people who know and cling on to their culture are rich in mind and called upon people from Masvingo Province to take their cultures seriously. She said the adoption of foreign culture has left children confused as they do not know how to do things the Zimbabwe way.
"It is with great honour that we are here commemorating culture which is found in this part of the district. The Shangaan people are the only ones left with great knowledge of their culture and I call upon Government through the Ministry of Education to encompass culture from minority communities into national syllabuses.
"The coming of foreign culture has greatly affected our culture as our kids are no longer able to do things according to our culture.
"It is only in this area that circumcision is still taken seriously and girls are taught how to conserve their marriages. Holding of this fair in a rural set up is a great idea as things are quite different from previous editions which were held in Chiredzi Town," said Mahofa.
Deputy Minister of Information, Media and Publicity Sthokozile Mathuthu said a community without culture is nothing and congratulated the people of Chiredzi for putting their culture together so that people from other areas can learn from them. She said Government through her ministry will continue programming the Shangaan culture on both the radio and television.
The cultural fair which is organised by Gaza Trust is now an annual event from the time of its inception four years ago. This year`s event began on Thursday July 28 and ended on Saturday. The fair was unique as it became the first to be held in a rural setup where visitors were treated to all rural cultural activities.
