CHIREDZI
– Chiredzi Town Council has resolved to slash maize grown in undesignated areas because residents are damaging sewerage pipes to get water to irrigate the crop.
Speaking at a stakeholders meeting organised by Zimbabwe Liberators Platform (ZLP) at the council offices in Chiredzi last Friday, town secretary Charles Muchatukwa said council will take stern action against urban farmers who are vandalizing sewer pipes.
He said the crops are not only going to be slashed but the farmers will be taken to court and sued for damages to the sewerage pipes.
He also said sewer pipes which were recently laid during a Fifteen Towns Program funded by Unicef to the tune of $2million are already damaged.
"We have a big problem with our sewer system and we agree with most of your concerns. Our sewer and water systems were commissioned in 1964 and they are now old. We got funding from UN through World Vision and we benefitted through the 15 Towns Program.
"During that program we repaired most of problematic sewer areas but we still have a problem as most of our pipes are being vandalized by urban farmers wanting to get water for irrigation. If you, residents support us we are going to slash these crops and take the culprits to court" said Muchatukwa.
All the residents and residents leaders present agreed that council should slash the crops as well as take the people to court as the town have a lot of evidence of sewer pipes who were vandalized to benefit a few.
