Zaka RDC, businessmen clash over $100 lease

    – Businessmen at Jerera Growth Point have threatened to hold a demonstration and close their shops if Council went ahead and effected annual lease permits of $100 for every unit at a building.
Council proposed in a full council meeting held on July 8, 2016 that if a business stand for example has several business units like a bottle store, butchery, a bar and a supermarket, each of those will pay $100.
"What we bought from council were business stands. How we structured our buildings is a different issue altogether. All we can do is pay per stand that we got from council and not pay for every door that is in the business building as proposed," said one businessman during the meeting.
Council also said that all businessmen who rent inside of every shop should pay their personal leases and these include outlets like Eco cash Agents, Phone shops, cobblers and vendors selling their products at the verandas. District Administrator Tapson Chivanga was also at the meeting and said that all those with businesses must pay including tenants.
One of the businessmen and also a ZANU-PF councilor Fanuel Tichaurawa said, "We are not going to pay even a dollar under that arrangement because some of us have five shops under one roof.
"We will demonstrate and close our shops if council insists on this warped arrangement," said Tichaurawa.
