GUTU - Rufaro High School has won the under 17 girls Copa Coca-Cola soccer tournament inter district competitions and will proceed to represent the Province together with the defending champions Chidyamakono High School at the national level competitions to take place from July 22-23 in Gwanda.
Rufaro High School girls' soccer team will be representing the province for the first time after beating the favorites, Pamushana High School 1-0 in the final game.
Pamushana High School was the favorite and much anticipated team going into the final match as they had knocked out the national Defending Champions, Chidyamakono High School in the quarter finals and had earlier thwarted Rufaro High School 1-0 in the group stage.
In the group stage, Rufaro High School suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Pamushana High School but went on to hammer Dewure High School 9-0 which saw them proceed to the semi finals where they won 3-0 against Masegwo High School.
In the quarter finals, three time national defending champions, Chidyamakono High School succumbed 1-0 to Pamushana High School after Pamushana scored in the 35th minute and Chidyamakono failed to capitalize on a penalty they received in the late minutes of the fixture.
"We are disappointed with the early exit, however we promise to fight in order to retain the championship at the national competitions as we are the current defending champions," said Margret Kuziwa who is the head coach of Chidyamakono High School soccer team.
Rufaro High School eased their way past Mwenezi Government High School as they won 1-0 to secure a place in the final game.
Pamushana were the favorites to win the tournament as they had once eased their way past Rufaro High School in the group stage, however a second half header from Tariro Chikoko saw Rufaro High School win and earn the right to represent the province in Gwanda.
Rufaro High head coach Tichaona Chademana said the team is ready for the competition and will raise the flag of Rufaro and Masvingo province high.
Ruth Mungate who is the captain of Rufaro promised fireworks as the team will be representing the province for the first time in a prestigious tournament and has been preparing its players for a long period.
"We promise not to just add numbers but fight and bring the trophy home," said news
