- Mt St Mary's High of Wedza District scooped most of the awards at the Harare Catholic Archdiocese Secondary Schools' Association (CASSA) Ball Games held at St Francis of Assisi two weeks ago.
The school grabbed awards in hand ball boys, soccer and netball. Eleven schools participated in the games.
Mt St Marys' soccer team beat St Francis Assisi by 2-1 in the final match to take home the honours.
"It was a successful tournament. The schools were disciplined. The teams played with a family spirit in a Christian way. We encourage that kind of behaviour in future," said Brother Aaron Mazhambe, a coordinator in the education secretariat of the archdiocese.
Visitation Makumbi of Goromonzi District maintained its long-held dominance in volleyball as it scooped prizes for both the girls' and boys' teams.
St Francis of Assisi went home with just one honour although it was a force to reckon with after entering five different finals.
It took home the girls' chess title but was in the boys' volleyball final, girls' handball final, netball final and soccer final.
The archdiocese sports consultant, Ignatius Vambe thanked all the schools for participating in the competitions.
"Sport is good in terms of socialisation but it has recently developed to become a multibillion dollar industry. I therefore urge everyone to put more effort and excel in future games," said Vambe.
Sister Claris Gowo, who is the Secretary in the Harare Archdiocese education secretariat, said there was a remarkable improvement in the performance of the 2016 CASSA games.
She also said the CASSA games are organised in order to bring together the Catholic family and enable socialisation and interaction.
"We do not emphasise on winning on these games. The main aim of such events is to bring you together to make you one family as Catholics. We are still in the Catholic Year of Mercy. Therefore, I urge pupils to behave well and relate to each other in a Christian way even as we play our games," Sister Claris said.
The Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Harare met again at Belvedere Teachers' College on July 1, 2016 for the choral competitions.
