SIMBARASHE MTEMBO

GWANDA –
History was made again and by the same Chivi-based high school.
Chidyamakono High School has for a record fourth time in a row won the Copa Coca-Cola U17 Girls' Soccer Competition shattering all records in the history of this prestigious schools' competition.
Chidyamakono set the new record by beating their old record of last year where they had won the trophy for a third time on the trot.
They walked with their heads high onto the podium on Sunday afternoon to receive the champions' trophy and $3 200 prize money. The Queens of Chivi had done it again.
The Copa Coca-cola trophy is played for both male and female schools' soccer teams and the second best record by any team is winning the trophy on two consecutive times.
And the schools that have won the trophy twice in a row since the inception of the trophy in 1989 are Hippo Valley High, Chemhanza, and Lord Malvern high schools in the boys section and Vainona High School in the girls.
Chidyamakono clinched its fourth title after beating Magwegwe High School 1-0 in the finals of 2016 Copa Coca-Cola soccer tournament that was held in Gwanda at Pelandaba Stadium on Saturday.
The Chivi based outfit had its work cut out as they faced a stubborn rival, Magwegwe High School from Bulawayo which was considered the favorite team to dethrone Chidyamakono as the team displayed quality passes and well executed finishing moves.
Chidyamakono High School faced a lot of pressure from Magwegwe High in the initial minutes of the fixture with Magwegwes' attacking midfielder Buhlebenkosi Zulu giving the champions a hard time with her superb ball control and passing abilities.
The defending champions began making waves with their striker Pelagia Toindepi dribbling through the Magwegwe defense easily but failing to capitalise, whilst the Chidyamakono defense got composure and denied Magwegwe any scoring opportunity in the box with Ndambakuwa Define raising the moral of the team and supporters with her exceptional defense skills which landed her a spot on the Copa Coca-Cola dream team.
Neria Mushede of Chidyamakono scored a free kick from outside the box which was missed by the Magwegwe goalkeeper after the ball bounced and went into the back of the net to give Chidyamakono the homerun as it sealed the match 1-0 in favor of the Chivi based outfit.
In the quarter finals, Chidyamakono thrashed Nyamauru 2-0 and proceeded to the semi finals where it thrashed Chipadze High 2-0.
"I am pleased with the performance that the girls have shown. Winning this tournament for 4 years in a row is a wonderful achievement, Chidyamakono are born winners and we shall continue winning," said Yeukai Chiruvu who is the head coach of Chidyamakono High School.
Chidyamakono also racked in 4 awards out of the 7 categories with its goalkeeper Nyaradzo Chifamba being named goalkeeper of the tournament after she only conceded one goal which was a penalty kick that was awarded to Magwegwe High School in the group stage and walked away with $100 whilst Chidyamakono head coach, Yeukai Chiruvu walked away with $100 prize money for being the best coach. Define Ndambakuwa was named the best defender and got $100 whilst Mushede won the golden boot with 3 scores.
The defending champions won their first ever Copa Coca-Cola tournament in 2013 under their coach Yeukai Chiruvu and have since dominated the sporting discipline as they have won all the U17 girls Copa Coca-Cola soccer tournament.
The school had 4 of its best players, namely Thelma Takavavinga, Neria Mushede, Precious Baison and Ruramai Cheteni nominated into the U17 girls dream team which is set to represent the country in Botswana.
"I am pleased with the girls team, it is such a great honor to be the headmaster of Chidyamakono," remarked a joyful Musorowegomo Morrison who is the Headmaster at Chidyamakono High School.
