– Some 50 Ndarama High School Advanced level History and Geography students toured the Great Zimbabwe Monuments recently in a program aimed at exposing them to different career programs that they can find at a heritage centre like that.
The tour was led by Steven Zvizvayi from the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare as part of the Ministry's career awareness programs.
Some of the career opportunities that they were informed about and actually saw the staff in action were the curator, responsible for gathering and storing of the tangible and intangible culture; heritage education officers, responsible for the dissemination of the information gathered; tour guides, those that take people around the heritage site showing the people the history of monuments; exhibition officers and taxidermists, responsible for exhibitions of the artifacts found at the site.
Elton Maunganidze who is the headboy at Ndarama said that the tour had successfully opened their eyes to the careers available at monuments.
"Before this exercise I only thought of the arts field in terms of degree programs like Law but this has opened up my mind to the different professions offered in the field of arts," said Maunganidze.
The vice head girl Juliet Machingami said that the students also took the opportunity to polish up on their history lessons.
"Learning history from the place it took place and touching some of the artifacts that were used at the time helps a lot rather than just reading it from the book," said Machingambi.
Masvingo Ministry of Labour Chief Executive Officer Stephen Zvizvai said that the Ministry makes sure it does a careers day in every district and every year so as to expose and prepare the children for the working industry.
