    – Commercial sex workers in Chiredzi have reduced their rates from $5 or $7 for an act to $1,50 and are sharing a room in large numbers as the economic situation bites and clients have become scarce.
A snap survey by The Mirror last week showed a huge influx of sex workers from Chipinge, Zaka, Mwenezi, Chivi and other far-flung places as young girls escape hunger at home. However, this has flooded the market and caused an oversupply which has forced the price of a round to plunge to $1,50.
Chiredzi is Masvingo Province's biggest economic hub because of the sugarcane industry that employs over 30 000 workers.
About 20 000 workers are employed by Tongaat alone.
The sex workers ply their trade mostly at Chigarapasi Beer Hall which is the biggest beerhall in Zimbabwe.
"I am a senior here and I have never seen a situation as bad as this before. The number of clients has become thin while sex workers have increased tremendously and the price for our work has plunged to $1.50 for a round. We used to charge $5 or $7 for a round but we have realised that it is better to go home with something than empty-handed," said Mufaro Chikomo who comes from Zaka.
She hoped that fortunes will improve when the sugar cutting seasoning begins after mid-May.
Another sex lady only identified as Mavy said she came with two other friends from Chipinge after hearing that there is business in Chiredzi but they are struggling to pay rentals forcing them to share a single room. She said they take turns to go with clients into the room.social news
