Chiredzi shocker: Councillors get 40 free stands each

    – An audit team that was recently despatched to Chiredzi Town Council has unearthed shocking corruption where councillors allegedly allocated each other up to 40 stands each and then sold them to third parties for personal gain.
The Minister of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing Minister Saviour Kasukuwere told The Mirror in a telephone interview this week that the corruption emerging from the investigations was so shocking that he would soon be going down to the Lowveld town to announce the findings himself and put in place necessary  remedies.
Kasukuwere recently sent an audit team to Chiredzi and the team is still there carrying out investigations.
He said he was not talking much about the findings until he announces them.
Pressed further, Kasukuwere said he was actually going to visit three towns on the same issues of corruption and these are Gokwe, Zvishavane and Chiredzi.
"A team which was despatched to Chiredzi compiled a report which unearthed various irregularities in the running of the local authorities. I will announce the findings personally when I come to Chiredzi on a date which I will advise.
"The biggest issue in Chiredzi is that councillors allocated themselves several stands the last time the town council unveiled stands and some councillors got 40 stands while others got even more. The team traced those stands and found that they were sold to third parties and that is corruption. I will go to Gokwe, Zvishavane and Chiredzi and my mission will be to restore order within the running of those towns," said Kasukuwere.
Investigations by The Mirror have shown that Chiredzi Town Council actually made a resolution to parcel out at least 40 stands to each councillor, stands which the beneficiaries would then donate to people of their own choice.
Council chairman, Francis Moyo confirmed the existence of the resolution when called by The Mirror.Local news
