– The Roman Catholic Church, Masvingo Diocese has marked its 17 years of existence by holding a colourful mass at Mutero Mission in Gutu last Sunday.
Sekuru Michael Dickson Bhasera who is the first bishop of the Diocese led the mass service. The Diocese was established on February 9, 1999 and Bishop Bhasera was installed on April 24, 1999. Bishop Bhasera has led and guided the Diocese since then.
The anniversary celebrations were held under the theme; Year 2016 of Mercy declared by Pope Francis. The Pope is under this theme asking Catholics to perform spiritual and corporal works of mercy.
Masvingo Diocese comprises of the following civil districts Beitbridge, Chiredzi, Chivi, Gutu, Bikita, Masvingo, Mwenezi and Zaka.
There are several major achievements realised by the Church following the establishment of the Diocese and these include the erection of Mary Queen of Peace Shrine at Gokomere in the year 2000.
Bishop Bhasera also established St Francis Xavier Ngundu Mission, St Vitalis Neshuro Mission, St Josephine Bhakita Tongogara Mission, St Monica Chikuku Mission and Training Centre, St Joseph Matiore Mission, St James Chivamba Mission, and Nemamwa Mission
He also built Avhunga Secondary School, Chatagwi Primary School and Nandi Secondary School. He also recently officially opened a Dam at Chikuku in Bikita.
Fr Rev Walter Nyatsanza is the Vicar General, Fr. Rudolf Nyandoro the Chancellor, Fr. Emmanuel Jongwe the Financial Administrator, the Secretary is Fr Cuthbert Mavedzenge, the Education Secretary Fr Zindova and  Fr. Richard Pundo is the Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP) Adviser.
The anniversary was well attended by Catholics from Masvingo diocese and several Catholic Priests.
