O - Graham Richard (pictured above),a group chairman of N Richards is one of the three prominent residents honoured by the City Council for outstanding contributions at the Friday function.
Coincidentally, Richards was honoured alongside his first workmate at N Richards in the 1960s', the late Mayor Femias Chakabuda.
They were both honoured for different pursuits.
The citation for Richards read, "Graham Richards is a respected citizen of Masvingo and his company has contributed a lot to charity and welfare organizations throughout the country. The group supports 12 such organizations and in addition they support provincial agriculture shows in all the provinces they operate from.''
Richards congratulated, posthumously though, his former workmate Chakabuda for getting the recognition. Richards said in his acceptance speech that he and his father were born in Masvingo, his father in 1918 and he in 1951. He said all his children were born and bred in Masvingo.
"Our first expansion to Masvingo town was in 1952 when my father rented a building at the present site of Benjamin Burombo House. In 1953 he began building a small wholesale at the present site of N. Richards Wholesale. This building has been added onto over the next thirty years.
In 1960, my father bought SP. Burger out and began running what was then known as Economy Corner, a full departmental store.
"The Richards family has been part of this great city since 1894, now 122 years. My father was born in Masvingo in 1918, l was born here in 1951, and all my children were born here as were my first grandchildren. Salemore Farm was our home for generations. It is with great pride that my wife and l still live in this amazing city of Masvingo with its wonderful people.
"The first seed for what became N.Richards & Co Pvt Ltd was sown by my grandmother, Mrs Winifred Richards in the early 1900's. Helped by my grandfather, Norman Richards, "Mutyakaza", my grandmother began by selling salt and tobacco.local news
