– Three robbers abducted Chikomba Rural District Council Chief Executive Officer Luckson Mutara at his house in Chivhu last week and demanded a ransom of $5 000.
Such kind of crime is not common in Zimbabwe and it sent shivers down the spines of residents of the small transit town. The abduction also comes barely a month after the council engineer was abducted in the same town.
Details remained sketch as Police remained mum over the case.
Mutara confirmed the case but declined to comment saying the matter was already before the courts.
The robbers allegedly took Mutara in their own motor vehicle to Harare, where they demanded the ransom. Mutara however, returned home safely on the same Monday after the robbers were caught.
"The matter is pending at the Rotten Row courts in Harare. I just want to thank God that I am alive," he said.
The robbers allegedly disguised as members of the CID and wanted to interrogate Mutara over cases to do with council. He complied.
After taking Mutara away from his home, the robbers later demanded US$5000 from him. While in Harare, Mutara used his mobile phone to communicate with the council officials, under the directive of the robbers, liaising with them to raise the money needed. The council officials reported the matter to the police in Chivhu. CBZ bank officials were also notified about the situation.
Late in the afternoon, the robbers took him to a CBZ branch in Southerton to withdraw the cash they needed.
At the bank, they let Mutara enter for cash withdrawal while they waited outside. While in the bank, Mutara told the manager that he actually did not need the money but he had been escorted by robbers to the bank. The CID police were alerted.
The CEO was later escorted out of the bank by security guards. When they saw him exiting the bank on guard, the awaiting robbers tried to escape but were caught by the police who already secured the place.
Mutara returned home safely on Monday evening.local news
