    BEITBRIDGE
    - A customs officer employed by the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority at Beitbridge has appeared before Beitbridge magistrate Godswill Mavenge facing allegations of facilitating smuggling of goods valued at $5 500.
Itai Gerald Chamunorwa (28) is accused of holding on to a date stamp number 613 from the Compliance Section which he later used to clear vehicles unofficially after he had been transferred to another section.
Prosecutor Pernson Chekeya told the court that on March 3 this year, Chamunorwa, also known as "Big Nuzz" because of his big frame, left his new work station in the Bonds Section and went to a section that clears vehicles with imports.
Using stamp 613 Chamunorwa stamped as processed three car gate passes for motorists that had not declared the goods on their vehicles.
The three vehicles were intercepted by anti-smuggling officers deployed at the entry point and the stamp number led to the arrest of Chamunorwa. The stamp together with a new one he had been issued were both found in his car, alleged Chekeya.
Chamunorwa was remanded to April 6 this year for the continuation of trial.local news
