    - Two girls who are relatives drowned in a dam near their homestead in Maketo village, Chief Chaka's area in the Midlands Province on Monday afternoon.
One of the deceased Deborah Dehwe (15) was from Gokwe and had visited her auntie for the school holidays. The other girl, Proud Maketo (14), was a Form 3 pupil at Mukomberanwa Secondary School.
Maketo's body was recovered from the dam a day later and Dehwe's body was only located two days later. They were both buried in Maketo Village.
Midlands Assistant Police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Ethel Mukwende confirmed the incident.
Sources said the girls drowned while they were swimming.
Chief Chaka said he was grieved by the incident and did not expect such a tragedy to happen in his area.
Joseph Mafa, an uncle to the late girls said the loss devastated the family but they got a bit of relief that they at least eventually managed to recover the bodies of the girls.
The girls left home at around mid-morning on Monday to fetch firewood in the company of a friend.
However, their friend later returned home and told the elders that the two had drowned in the dam.
"When we arrived at the dam that afternoon, we found their clothes on the bank of the dam but the girls were nowhere to be found.
''We later found Proud floating in the water in the early hours of Tuesday and we continued the search until we located Deborah's remains on Wednesday afternoon," said Mafa.
Police has urged members of the public not get into water bodies when they know they do not have the capacity to swim.local news
