    – Zimbabwe National Water Authority (ZINWA) has finally deployed personnel at Chilonga Irrigation scheme to complete the installation of new water pumps which could not be done for a number of years now.
This came after they were given a deadline by Deputy Minister of Agriculture Davison Marapira during a visit last month.
The Mirror visited the irrigation scheme on Sunday and despite it being a weekend workers from ZINWA were busy at work. Members of the irrigation scheme are now optimistic that this year they will put crops in the ground after they last did it in 2007. They thanked the intervention  of Marapira which pushed ZINWA to deploy workforce to the site after the engineer who was working there got ill last year.
"We are now happy that work is now at an advanced stage, the pumps and all other equipment are now in our hands and the engineers from ZINWA are working on installing them. We were being given a lot of promises but we hope this year we will plant crops at our irrigated fields.
"As you can see they are working even during the weekends. This is a critical project since this region is always dry and irrigation gives us life," said Phinias Muguva a committee member.
Chilonga irrigation scheme was formed in 1964 and supports over 5 000 people. Its water pumps broke down in 2007 and they got other pumps from SADC but the pumps had been idle as engineers were failing to install them.local news
