    Masvingo’s talented but unrecognised poet

    MIRROR REPORTER

He is probably one of Masvingo's best poets ever, but undoubtedly the least recognised.
Never mind his education. He only went as far as grade 7 as he ran away from school on his second day in form one at Rupiri in Gutu.
He is Abel Mauchi (pictured right), one of the authors of several poems in the current Zimsec Shona Literature set book called Mutakunanzva.
Despite reaching the zenith of Zimbabwe literature, Mauchi remains an ordinary villager who entertains people gathered at rural business and traditional beer functions. He makes money from building houses in the village.
Being a flawless poet has not brought much fortune to Mauchi and The Mirror bumped into him recently when he was in Masvingo to attend meetings for poets organised by ZimDigital.
The plans by Government to open new television stations, both public and private has given Manyuchi hope.
"Now there is a market where we can sell our artistic products. I am happy that Government has decided to go this route because we are going to write plays, act and recite poems and there are television stations that are ready to buy our products depending on their quality," said Manyuchi.
Manyuchi is one poet who can make one proud of his or her mother language. His poems on love, human rights, tramps get one's blood running in the nerves. One can hear a needle dropping in a packed room when he starts reciting his poems.
Born in 1975, Mauchi went to Mutendeuri Primary School and attended Nerupiri Secondary for just two days before running away to Harare.
"It was while I was in Harare that I picked a torn page carrying poems on one side by Mordekai Hamutyinei and on the flip side by Ignatious Zvarevashe. I became so inspired that I wanted to write and that's how it all started.
"I have been writing and writing but things only turned for the better in 2013 when I met Eriam Musendekwa who supported me financially to have my poems typed and send to publishers.
"I want to thank Musendekwa for his kindness and consideration of other people. He has seen me making a step up," said Mauchi.
The other person who also helped him is the late Prosper Mbwachena Guuriro.
Some of the poems that made it into the set book Mutakunanzva are Ndongonyarara ndichingotsunyiwa, Chimanda Chamuchareva and Mari.........
He is married to Lucia Chirume and he has three children, Ish-bosheth, Meph-bosheth and Ai-bosheth.
"These are names from the bible and they were all children of Saul. I chose these names because I hear that at night witches call out the names of the people they want to bewitch. These are difficult names and no witch in our villager will be able to call them. The witches are used to such simple names as Peter, Mary, Tatenda, Tino and not those of my children," said Mauchi with a serious frown on his face.
