    NYANGA
    – Prominent Harare gynecologist, Dr Gerald Madziyire was the first to the line in the tortuous annual Harare Athletic Club 18km race held at the Troutbeck Inn Hotel in Nyanga on Sunday.
The race which is organized by HAC has been conducted for the past 20 years. HAC chairman Martin Webster confirmed the results and thanked Old Mutual, Such Lubricant and ZB Bank for sponsoring the event.
Madziyire beat 81 other competitors to reach home in a remarkable time of 1hr 29 minutes 55seconds. The first female athlete home in the same race was Mirriam Choga who managed to finish in 1hr 43 minutes.
The race is unique in that it is tough as the athletes race up from Troutbeck up to the World's View Summit and then downhill to the hotel. The course has a gruesome terrain with an altitude difference of 441m, starting from 1 800m above sea level at the starting point to 2 300m above sea level at the summit.
Careful negotiation of terrain is particularly important when athletes race downhill as injuries are very possible while retention of oxygen is difficult at higher altitude.
Madziyire had a comfortable lead of 1 minute 12 seconds with the second best athlete Laki Ngwenya crossing the line on 1hr 31minutes 07 seconds. The next three athletes were Stuart Gemmill on 1.34.17; Blessed Chimbwanda 1.35.16 and on number 5 was Ian Clark 1.36.55.
Webster said participants in the race increased from 60 last year to 82 this year and he partially attributed this to the fact that the event coincided with the African Series International Triathlon that was taking place in Nyanga at the same time.
There were 77 athletes who managed to complete the race.
Harare Athletics Club is based at the Old Georgians in Harare with 200 members. It is a Club of long distance, marathon and half marathon athletes and races are done for fun for the members and also in endeavor to keep them fit. The athletes and winners got diaries honorary prize for completing the tough race.
HAC organizes two other races, the Old Mutual Relay Challenge and the Miler.
Madziyire said he was happy to be the winner of this edition and added that the race is tough.
"I am happy to be the winner out of the 80 people who took part in the race, it gives me motivation to continue training and it also keeps me physically fit," Madiyire said.
Madziyire said that he trains at least two times a week at the HAC for him to keep in form.
"I am always in form because of the vigorous training that I do at least two times a week at the HAC," he said.sport
