– Police is investigating a senior Central Intelligence Officer (CIO name supplied) who was allegedly caught on Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) using fake US$100 to buy goods from Pick and Pay Supermarket in Chivhu.
The incident happened last month. Police officers in Mash East appeared uneasy with the story as they referred Mirror reporters from one office to another when approached for a comment.
Mashonaland East acting Police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Tendai Mwanza initially said he was waiting for a report from Chivhu, a few days later he said the report was missing, he later said that he was not commenting.
A senior manager at Pick and Pay however confirmed the incident to The Mirror.
"It is true that a prominent figure in Chivhu was captured on CCTV buying from the supermarket using a fake US100 note. We have the CCTV clip and we have photocopied the money.
"This operative also sent a message to the girl who was on the till saying that he would replace the money when he gets his salary at the end of the month. The goods bought were worth $10," said the manager.
Senior Police officers in Chivhu also confirmed the report but referred questions to Marondera for comment.
The allegations are that the well known and powerful operative went into Pick and Pay Supermarket at around 8pm and presented a US$100 note.
It was discovered when final counting of the money was done that there was a fake $100 and it was the only one in that till.
Pick n Pay staff then used the closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera to find the person who had used the $100 note on that particular till. It is then that the intelligence operative was allegedly identified.
A source at Pick and Pay said the operative was phoned and he did not dispute the allegations but promised to pay back the money.
However, when external supervisors found out there was a shortfall of $100 in the cash submitted on that day, they ordered a Police report to be made and the case was taken to the Police.local news
